What Should You Do If Too Much Chlorine Is Added to the Pool?

Anantolia Pool & SPA

Chlorine is an indispensable disinfectant for maintaining pool hygiene. However, adding too much chlorine to the pool due to manual measurement errors or incorrect dosing not only makes the water unusable but also creates serious dangers for human health and pool surfaces.

What Are the Dangers of High Chlorine?

When the ideal free chlorine level (usually 1.0 - 3.0 ppm) is exceeded, the following problems occur:

  • Skin and Eye Irritation: High chlorine causes redness and burning in the eyes, as well as severe dryness and itching on the skin.
  • Respiratory Difficulty: Dense chlorine gas accumulating on the pool surface causes coughing and respiratory tract irritation, especially in indoor pools.
  • Material Corrosion: Excess chlorine makes the water corrosive; while fading the color of swimsuits, it accelerates rusting on pool ladders, lights, and plant room equipment.

Ways to Lower High Chlorine Levels

If your test kit indicates that the chlorine level is too high, you should close the pool to swimmers and follow these steps:

  • Utilize Sunlight: Ultraviolet (UV) rays break down chlorine rapidly. If it is an outdoor pool, stopping the addition of chlorine and circulating the water under the sun will lower the chlorine naturally.
  • Partial Water Replacement: One of the most effective and safe methods is to dilute the chlorine by draining some of the pool water (via backwashing) and replacing it with fresh water from the mains.
  • Using a Chlorine Neutralizer: If you need to open the pool urgently, you can chemically neutralize the excess chlorine using special pool chemicals based on "Sodium Thiosulfate" or "Hydrogen Peroxide".
