What Should Be the Voltage and Safety Standards for Underwater Pool LED Lights?

In pool systems where water and electricity come together, safety can never be left to chance. Underwater pool LED lights must be designed strictly adhering to international standards (IEC 60364-7-702) not only to provide an aesthetic nighttime view but also to ensure the safety of swimmers.

What Is the Ideal Voltage for Underwater Pool Lights?

It is strictly prohibited and fatally risky for any electrical device operating underwater to run directly on mains voltage (220V/240V).

  • Underwater lighting fixtures must operate on a 12V (or 24V in some special systems) low voltage (SELV - Safety Extra Low Voltage) as a standard.
  • To provide this low voltage, specially insulated pool transformers are used in the plant room to step down the 220V electricity from the grid to 12V.
  • In the event of a possible short circuit, a 12V current does not pose a vital risk to the human body.

IP68 Ingress Protection Rating and Safety Standards

Using low voltage alone is not enough; underwater lighting fixtures must also structurally meet certain requirements:

  • IP68 Certification: Pool lights must absolutely have an IP68 protection class. This code guarantees that the product is fully protected against dust and will absolutely not leak water even when continuously submerged under pressure.
  • Resin Insulation (Epoxy): The internal mechanisms of modern, high-quality pool LEDs are completely coated with a special epoxy resin, making it physically impossible for water to reach the electronic circuits.
  • Cable Connections: Cable joints behind the light must be insulated using heat-shrink tubing or special resin-filled underwater junction boxes.

Grounding and Residual Current Protection

According to engineering rules, all metal components in the pool (ladders, handrails, etc.) and the outer casings of the lighting systems must be connected to an equipotential bonding busbar. In addition, it is a legal requirement to have a Residual Current Device (RCD) with a sensitivity of 30mA in the electrical panel feeding the pool.

Engineering Assurance with Anatolia Pool & Spa

Underwater lighting installation is an area that is difficult and risky to intervene in later. At Anatolia Pool & Spa, in every pool project we build from scratch, we design all processes from wiring to panel arrangement in accordance with international safety standards.

With our highly watertight IP68 certified LED fixtures, high-quality isolation transformers, and fully protected electrical infrastructure, we illuminate your water with aesthetics and your safety with professional engineering. Contact us for a healthy and safe pool experience.

Why Should the Backwash Process Be Checked More Frequently at the End of Summer?

Backwashing is the process of reversing the flow of water to flush out dirt, dust, and organic debris trapped inside the pool's sand filter. While this procedure is typically done once a week during standard periods, it must be monitored much more carefully and performed more frequently as we approach the end of summer due to the increased filter load.

Factors Straining the Sand Filter at the End of Summer

Your pool operates at maximum capacity throughout the entire summer season. By the time August and September arrive, the main factors increasing your filter's burden include:

  • Cosmetics and Body Oils: Sunscreens, tanning oils, and sweat that mix into the water throughout the summer cause the sand grains in the filter to stick together and petrify (calcify).
  • High Organic Waste Load: The increased number of swimmers in hot weather leaves more microscopic waste in the water. This waste clogs the filter much faster.
  • Increase in TDS (Total Dissolved Solids): As water evaporates, minerals and chemical residues are left behind. Backwashing not only cleans the filter but also allows fresh water to be added to the pool, reducing the water's chemical fatigue (TDS).
  • Early Autumn Winds: Dry winds starting at the end of summer carry fine dust, pollen, and early falling leaves into the pool, rapidly increasing the filter pressure.

How Do You Know If the Filter Is Clogged?

The pressure gauge on the filter gives you clear information about the system's health. When the operating pressure of a clean filter is at its standard level, and the gauge needle rises 0.5 to 0.7 bar (7-10 psi) above this standard value, it is definitely time to backwash.

Smart Filtration Infrastructure with Anatolia Pool & Spa

Constantly checking the filter pressure manually and turning backwash valves is a cumbersome process. At Anatolia Pool & Spa, we integrate fully automatic backwash valves into the professional plant rooms we build upon request.

These systems automatically initiate and complete the backwash process without human intervention when the filter pressure rises. Contact us for marvelously engineered pool systems that extend the life of your plumbing and keep your water crystal clear at all times.
